Quebec launches “green” insulation spray

Huntsman Building Solutions, a six-month old company in Boisbriand, Quebec, has rolled out a “coast-to-coast” road show to showcase what it claims is a new spray-on insulation “with a zero-ozone depletion potential.”
Hunstman said its Heatlok Soya HFO (hydrofluoroolefin) closed-cell insulation is the most environmentally-conscious blowing agent produced because it has a global warming potential of 1, which, it says, is 99.9 per cent lower than current hydrofluoroolefin used in the industry.
“It also has the highest R-value in the industry which is R-6/inch,” the company said in a statement.
“There’s a demand for HFO-based product as builders, architects, specifiers and general contractors are looking to design and build with the future in mind. Our Building Science teams have been in front of the building and design communities explaining the impact of the blowing agent change and preparing them for the switch to an environmentally friendly high-performance spray foam,” said Simon Baker, president of Huntsman Building Solutions.
According to the company, the green aspects of Heatlok Soya HFO insulation go far beyond saving the ozone level. This HFO contains 22 per cent recycled plastic and renewable soya oil content, the firm notes.
“The installation generates zero waste, zero trash on the jobsite. There is no packaging, the system is sold in liquid form in returnable or recyclable containers,” explained Doug Brady, vice-president of global innovation and product management at Huntsman Building Solutions.
Huntsman Building Solutions, formed in May 2020 through the merger of the spray polyurethane foam companies Demilec and Icynene-Lapolla, is a business unit of U.S.-based Huntsman Corporation.
